Getting comfortable ranked among the top reasons working adults gave for falling short in Sund’s survey. His book names that limit and shows readers how to move past it.
Not every barrier looks like a barrier. Some of the limits that hold people back feel more like a well-earned rest: a steady job, a routine that works, a life that is fine. Bestselling author and keynote speaker Chris Sund has a name for that limit. He calls it the Comfort Ceiling.
The Comfort Ceiling is one of the chapters in his book, You Are Capable of More: A No-Excuses Guide to Becoming Your Best Self, and it names the invisible limit people quietly set for themselves.
Comfortable, and Capable of More
Sund surveyed more than 200 working adults for the book, and 92 percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing today. Seventy-eight percent said they delay action on things that matter to them, and 71 percent said they fall short of their potential daily or weekly.
When respondents named what holds them back, they ranked self-doubt and fear of failure first, being too busy second and getting comfortable third. Unlike self-doubt or a packed calendar, comfort rarely announces itself. Sund points out that none of these barriers is about ability.
He has explored the idea in a personal essay for Tiny Buddha, How Doing Fine Was Actually Holding Me Back, and on WFLA’s Bloom in Tampa, in a segment on why capable people settle for less than they are able to do.
“You didn’t hit your limit. You just found where it used to be.”
Why the Ceiling Matters
Sund’s personal mission is to help as many people as possible become the best version of themselves. The Comfort Ceiling matters to that mission because a life that looks fine from the outside can still hold a great deal of unused potential.
“There is more inside of you than you have been using,” Sund said. “Most of the time the next level is not about learning something new. It is about finally acting on what you already know.”
Sund has spent his career hiring, developing and promoting people, and over and over he watched capable people hold back until someone told them they were ready. In the book, he uses honest personal stories, including his own setbacks, to show readers how to take ownership of their choices and build the habits that turn good intentions into progress.
Moving Past the Ceiling
The Comfort Ceiling sits alongside chapters that address the other barriers from his research. Train Your Inner Voice shows readers how to keep moving without waiting for doubt to disappear first, and Time Is Your Edge makes the case that most of life is made of ordinary days, and that how those days are spent decides where a person ends up. Each chapter ends with actions readers can take that day, and a closing Playbook helps them put the lessons to work in their own lives.
His advice for getting started is simple. You do not have to have everything figured out to begin. Start where you are, work with what you have and take the next step.
“My goal is to help people become the best version of themselves,” Sund said. “Self-doubt does not have to disappear for you to move forward. It can come along for the ride. It just does not get to drive.”
